Back to School                            posted on 8/16/06

Today marks the first day of school for many all across the nation. It's a great opportunity to start off with a clean slate, set goals and priorities for the new school  year.  We decided to home school our boys; our oldest is using the Abeka DVD curriculum and starting K-5 this year. One of the first questions we get asked when the topic of home schooling comes up is "what about socializing with others"? Granted, socializing is important, which I myself have struggled with over the years (I went to public school by the way).  I think the case can be argued both ways; their are plenty of opportunities for home school kids to socialize with different groups at church, co-op groups, sports, and there's many other clubs. So with all that said, the real issue is the priorities and goals for our children (Future Leaders). Should they only include the following;  great socializing skills,  becoming a football star, going to college, becoming a doctor or lawyer, having a 4.0 grade point avg., making a lot of money, becoming a movie star, or being cool with lots of friends. Those are all fine goals to strive for but they are only short term in nature -  worldly goals.  Or instead,  should not the top goal as parents be;  providing a solid foundation (Biblical Worldview), and to present the Case for Christ, so that when they die (one thing is certain - death); they will have eternity in heaven.  Everything else is meaningless without Christ! Can this be done by sending your kids to public school?  Unfortunately,  today's public schools are not what the founders originally set up. They (the public schools) were set up primarily so that the population could learn to read the Bible. The founders knew that Liberty could only be maintained if the population understood that the source for Liberty comes from God and the Gospel message, not man (History shows that man will always restrict and take it away). All of that changed in the 1960's when some unelected judges decided to replaced prayer and the bible with a dangerous secular worldview, were Christian principles have no place in public education.  The results: sky rocking crime rates, high teenage pregnancy rates,  and we could go on and on.  The Bible says to train your children up in the way of the Lord; not a secular worldview. So, if your kids are going to public school you better be de-programming the secular worldview that they are being taught, and presenting the Case for Christ daily! When you lay a concrete foundation for your new home, you don't intentionally put cracks and air pockets in it - do you? So, don't put cracks in your kid's foundation; build a solid foundation first, so that they can weather the storm down the road!

The above scene is commonplace throughout our military communities, it's the return home of our heroes (fathers, sons, mothers, daughters, brothers, and sisters) after a long deployment, often times well over 6 months. It's a time of great excitement, joy, comfort, and peace. For the sailor (soldier, airmen, and marine) it's a time to put away all the intense stress they have been through, and to focus on their family, and for the family it's a time of relief; their loved one is home and safe! I remember the crew of our boat (SSN-682) talking about the homecoming, weeks before arriving, it's amazing that we got anything done, those last few days of deployment. I also remember everyone fighting for a turn at the periscope after making that final turn past Ford Island (Pearl Harbor), to see who's on the pier waiting for them. I myself was single and didn't have anyone waiting, so I would usually volunteer to stand the first duty section watch. Which was no problem, because the joy of seeing your shipmates (friends) greet their families was worth it. Those were some great days after arriving back home. Click here to post your homecoming stories (Sound Off - Topics).

It's the readjustment the weeks following, that has me concerned. The wife, having to take care of the family business herself, has in many ways become independent and is not ready for someone else to step in and help with the decision making; the sailor (soldier, airmen, marine) can only put away the stress for so long and needs a relief. This last year alone, divorce rates for Army officers went up 78%. Suicides among Marines went up 29%. I know on our boat, there were always several breakups, a month or so after returning home.  Our heroes and their families are in big trouble, and they need help. These brave young men and women are this country's future, and are the best hope for maintaining the "America way of life"; which is Life, Liberty, and Justice for all. Care packages our great, however what these young men and women need is a strong foundation. A Solid Rock; that rock can only be found in Christ Jesus.  "On Christ the Solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand; When darkness veils His lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace; In every high and stormy gale, My anchor holds within the veil."

Well, I was listening to the radio the other day (month or so ago) and Major General (Retired) Robert Dees was on talking about this very subject. General Dees is the Executive Director of Military Ministry; a division of Campus Crusade for Christ International. So, I went to their website and did a little research and found they our dedicated to helping our Military Families. By conducting a large number of Military Marriage Seminars, forming and leading Homebuilders discipleship groups, and providing Family Readiness Kits (FRK) to couples and families directly through military chaplains; They are on the front lines of this battle to preserve our Military Families.  Please Support this ministry with your financial support and most importantly your prayers.
