After his rookie season
with the Pittsburgh Steelers,
this player
was drafted in the army and sent off to fight in Vietnam. On August
20, 1969 his platoon was ambushed in a rice paddy. During this
ambush he was wounded in the left thigh, and while he was down, he
was hit again by shrapnel from a grenade into his right leg and
foot. Upon his return he couldn't walk without being in pain, and he
weighed only 180 pounds; but after a lot of hard work in the off
season, he made the Steelers starting line up in the 1974 season as
a running back. With his help the Steelers would go on to win four
Super Bowl Championships. His struggle to
recover from his injuries was dramatized in the 1980 film
Fighting Back starring Robert Urich.
