The newly released DVD "Flags
of Our Fathers" is based on the true story of the battle
for the Pacific Island of Iwo Jima. The movie focuses on the famous
photo taken on
this mount, were 5 marines and a navy corpsman raised
the American flag. Due to the well dug in Japanese army with an
extensive system
of caves and tunnels
the battle for Iwo Jima would go on for 35 days, taking over 6,800
American lives including 3 of the 6 flag-raisers. Admiral Nimitz
would later remark "Among the men who fought on Iwo Jima,
uncommon valor was a common virtue". Twenty seven marines and
sailors would be awarded the Medal of Honor for their actions on Iwo
Jima (the most ever given in a single battle to date). Navy
Secretary James Forrestal is quoted as saying "the raising of
that flag on Mt. ******** means a Marine Corps for the next five
hundred years".
