The new movie
Amazing Grace
tells the story of William Wilberforce and his role as a
member of Parliament to end the slave trade. One of Wilberforce's
friends (advisor) was once a slave trader himself! Not only was he
once a slave trader (slave ship master) but was also caught in the
attempt of desertion onboard the HMS Harwich earlier in his life. He
soon became a servant and found himself brutally used by his master,
suffering starvation, illness and exposure. In 1748 on a return trip
back to England, he found himself in a serve storm which threatened
to overwhelm the ship, he prayed for God's mercy and the ship was
saved. He soon began reading the Bible and became a Christian, and
would later become an
Anglican priest. It was in this role
as an Anglican priest that he would advise Wilberforce and help
fight to end the slave trade. He is perhaps best known, not as an
Anglican Priest or Wilberforce's friend (advisor) but as the author
of the
most popular
English hymn of the last century - "Amazing Grace".
