On February 24th 1836 approximately 3000 Mexican army troops under the command of General Santa Ana surrounded this old Spanish Missionary complex near present day San Antonio. Some 189 Texans who were fighting for Independence from Mexico would (against all odds) hold them off for 13 days. On March 6, 1836 the final assault came and nearly all the Texan defenders would be dead including Davy Crockett, William Travis and Jim Bowie. Because of their brave hold out and ultimate sacrifice, Sam Houston had time to gather men and supplies and would later win a major battle at San Jacinto and capture Santa Ana. To this day people worldwide continue to remember this Battle as a heroic struggle against overwhelming odds — a place where men made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. Name this old Spanish Missionary Complex where the Texans held off Santa Ana's men for 13 days and which would later help Texas win Independence with the battle cry "Remember the ______".
