Dear Patriots,

Stephen from Logansport, IN is this weeks history challenge winner!  Stephen will be sent the book "Rediscovering God In America" by Newt Gingrich.  Samuel  Smith was the correct answer; click here for the resource information!

My Country tis of thee, Sweet land of Liberty, Of thee I sing: Land where my fathers died, Land of the pilgrim's pride, From every mountain side Let freedom ring!

My native country, thee, Land of the noble free, Thy name I love: I love thy rocks and rills, Thy woods and templed hills; My heart with rapture thrills Like that above.

Let music swell the breeze, And ring from all the trees Sweet freedom's song: Let mortal tongues a-wake, Let all that breathe par-take; Let rocks their silence break, the sound pro-long.

Our fathers God, to thee, Author of liberty, to thee we sing; Long may our land be bright With freedom's holy light: Protect us by they might, Great God, our King.

Sincerely,

Chris Peterson

Weekly History Challenge - 7/30/07

This weeks prize is the book "Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices, & Priorities of a Winning Life" By Tony Dungy.

On May 17, 1776 (a day which congress set aside as a "day of Humiliation, Fasting, and Prayer") a Presbyterian minister, who was also the president of the College of New Jersey (Princeton), and one of the eventual fifty-six signers of the Declaration of Independence, gave a sermon that was widely reprinted. Including the following remarks.

"While we give praise to God, the supreme disposer of all events, for His interposition on our behalf, let us guard against the dangerous error of trusting in, or boasting of, an arm of flesh...  I look upon ostentation and confidence to be sort of outrage upon providence, and when it becomes general, and infuses itself into the spirit of a people, it is a forerunner to destruction. But observe that if your cause is just, if your principles are pure, and if your conduct is prudent, you need not fear the multitude of opposing hosts. What follows from this? That he is the best friend to American liberty who is most sincere and active in promoting true and undefiled religion."

Name this Presbyterian minister and signer of the Declaration of Independence.
