After World War I,
this unknown Tennessee soldier was thrust into the annals of
living history. Whether Alvin York liked it or not, his war
deeds, as recorded in his own writing and portrayed by Gary
Cooper in the classic film, brought him national and worldwide
attention. People wanted to know all about the shy and quiet
Christian soldier who some enthusiastically said captured the
whole German army. This book is a three-fold perspective of
Sergeant York and the Great War. The first consists of
primary-source material from Alvin C. York's own wartime
journal. The second facet involves the contemporary author Tom
Skeyhill and his recorded interviews with Alvin York after World
War I. For further understanding, the editor has included
background research and rare photos of the war. This

On November 19th, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln delivered a short 267
word speech, which has now become world renowned and is engraved in
stone at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington , D.C.. In his address
Lincoln proclaimed: "That we here highly resolve that these dead
shall not have died in vain - that this nation, under God, shall
have a new birth of freedom
and that government of the people, by the people, for the people,
shall not perish from the earth".
Lincoln delivered this speech four months after this famous
battle, which many historians say was the turning point of the war.
The battle consisted of three intense days of fighting with over
50,000 deaths.
