Weekly History Challenge

This week's prize is the DVD "Global Warming: A Scientific and Biblical Expose of Climate Change"

On September 2nd 1944, four aircraft from VT-51 (a Torpedo Bomber Squadron) attacked the Japanese installations on Chi Chi Jima from the aircraft carrier San Jacinto. During the attack they encountered intense antiaircraft fire and this pilot took a hit catching his engine on fire. He managed to complete the attack by releasing his bombs over the target scoring several damaging hits before heading back several miles towards the San Jacinto and bailing out over the water.  He would be rescued four hours later by the Submarine USS Finback. Throughout 1944, he had flown 58 combat missions for which he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, three Air Medals, and a Presidential Unit Citation. Many years later he would become the President of the United States. Name this pilot.
